It’s one of the best kept secrets in the central North Island. Nestled in an idyllic and peaceful garden environment and alongside the Tongariro River, this luxury lodge is in harmony with its stunning natural surrounds.

River Birches is in the heart of an area that’s world renowned for its fly fishing, and hiking in the World Heritage Tongariro National Park; home to the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing, as well as skiing in winter.

We offer a delicious dinner prepared by our Chef, sourced from only the very best fresh local produce.  As well as the award winning lodge, The Cottage at River Birches has all the comforts of a ‘home away from home’. It’s perfect for those seeking the privacy and convenience of self catering, with the option of dinner prepared by Chef.

Accommodation

River Birches Lodge has three stunning guest rooms, each a quiet haven of comfort and style, with its own deck, large luxury ensuite, and a super king-size bed or super twin beds. All have beautiful garden views.

Positioned alongside the lodge is the newest addition, The Cottage. Set amidst the beautiful surrounds of the River Birches environment, The Cottage is a three-bedroom self-contained property with service options available if desired.

Local attractions

Next to iconic fly-fishing river the Tongariro, River Birches is in the heart of the North Island’s inspirational outdoor environment. Nearby is the Tongariro National Park, a World Heritage site renowned for one of the world’s greatest walks – the Tongariro Alpine Crossing -- and superb skiing in winter. Enjoy riverside walks, white water rafting, mountain biking, boating, fishing and swimming.

Finding your way

By air regular flights connect Auckland and Wellington with Taupo, the nearest domestic airport to Turangi. The road from Taupo to Turangi follows the edge of the lake, making it a very scenic journey of about 40 minutes. 

By road from Auckland the drive to Turangi takes about 4.5 hours. After crossing the Tongariro River bridge take the first turn on your left (Link Road). Turn right into Taupahi Road and Koura Street is the third turn on your left.

By road from Wellington the drive to Turangi takes about 4 hours. On your approach into Turangi, turn right off State Highway One into Taupahi Road. Koura Street is the second turn on your right.
